Maharana Jai Singh II was a Kachhwaha Rajput monarch who ruled from 1699-1744. His former capital Amber which is situated about 11kms away from Jaipur but the capital in Amber was soon shifted to Jaipur due to scarcity of water. Jaipur can claim to be the the first planned city of India for Mahraraja Jai Singh took great interest while designing this city of Jaipur.
With architectural advice from Vidyadhar Bhattarcharya, a mathematician and Bramhin scholar of Maharaja Jai Singh II started the construction of the city of Jaipur 1727. According to the annals of history of Jaipur, the major palaces, roads and square of this beautiful city was constructed in about 4 years. Since during that time Maharaja Jai Singh II was fighting a battle with the Marathas that is why he laid heavy stress on the security aspect of the city of Jaipur. For security reasons gigantic fortification walls were made in the city along with seven strong gates. The city was built following the tenets of Shilpa Shastra or the Indian Architecture. The city was dissected into nine blocks, out of which two encompassed the state buildings and palaces, whereas the remaining seven blocks were allotted to the public.
One major aspect of the history of Jaipur happened in the year 18 53. During the year 1853, when Prince of Wales visited Jaipur, the entire city was painted in Pink color to welcome him. Till today the neat and broadly laid-out avenues of Jaipur and the elegant havelis and palaces in Jaipur which painted in pink provide a breathtaking charm to the city. Jaipur is well endowed with a rich cultural heritage and a royal architectural beauty. Jaipur, the city of victory really carves a niche into the hearts of the people with its splendid charm.
